In Part Two of our report on how to conserve funds whilst planning a Spring Break vacation, we reveal more budget-conscious tips for savvy travelers in search of mojitos and white sand beaches this season.

If you’re on a tight budget this season but don’t want to miss out on Spring Break revelries, there are plenty of ways to save money on warm weather getaways. Spring Break hotel and flight prices reach their peak in March and the beginning of April, but there are several ways to cut costs on packages and even book a great deal at the 11th hour.

1. Make a last minute reservation

This is the antithesis of the final tip from Part One of our guide. If you have flexible travel dates, consider booking your vacation at the last minute—one to two weeks before departure. Many hotels and airlines post open reservations online to fill rooms or planes because of traveler cancellations. Consider reworking your schedule so that you can take advantage of these deals at a fraction of market cost. Pay attention to the day of the week you’re traveling, too. Departures on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays are typically priced lower than those near the end of the week.

2. Use your frequent flier miles

If you’ve been racking up frequent flier miles from holiday shopping, use them up for your Spring Break getaway. Visit various airlines’ websites to find out how to redeem your frequent flier miles for the upcoming trip, then scour hotel deals online to put together your own low-cost package. This is a great way to save money during this peak travel season.

3. Plan a self-guided trip

Pick up a guidebook or do some destination research online to map out your own itinerary. You’ll save on the cost of guided tours and sightseeing adventures, and can enjoy the freedom of determining your own schedule. Guidebooks are relatively inexpensive and can give you a glimpse of area attractions and sites you might be interested in. You can also print up a list of attractions off the web and read traveler’s blogs to get an insider’s perspective on various sites.

4. Consider a hostel stay

If you can’t find a good hotel deal at your destination of choice, do some research on locally-owned hostels or bed and breakfasts. While you won’t be able to enjoy resort-style amenities and services, you’ll be able to save a few hundred dollars on the cost of accommodations and can spend the money on attractions and tours instead.

5. Consider an offbeat destination

If you’re not interested in the party scene, consider booking your Spring Break adventure at an offbeat destination that’s in its low season. Ski resorts and exotic locales far from beachfront party territory are two great options.

6. Consult your college

As many Spring Break packages are tailored toward penny-pinching students, co-eds often have an advantage over other travelers. Several universities have on-site travel agencies, if not their own sponsored Spring Break getaways. For the uber budget-conscious, some colleges and their student groups are sponsoring fun “staycations,” or, day and weekend outings that those staying near campus can enjoy. Local hikes and volunteer opportunities may await you during the day, while standard college after-hours activities are still a viable option once the sun sets, albeit not on a sandy beach.
