Barbados has been putting a lot of effort into advertising its credentials as a tourist destination. It recently won an award for its official tourism web site, Totally Barbados. But does the non-cyber version of this Caribbean nation live up to the hype created by its online incarnation?

Many Caribbean nations have what Barbados has: idyllic beaches. There are plenty of other attractions on these islands that go unmentioned in most tourism brochures. Savvy tourists sometimes visit to take advantage of these less-publicized activities, but most people don’t ever get past tourist areas. Totally Barbados brings many of these non-resort features to the forefront.

TotallyBarbados.com highlights many of the Barbados’s unique and “undiscovered” attributes. Because of its history as an English colony, the country has a strong European vibe. There are traffic roundabouts and colonial style buildings galore. Cricket is the national sport and it is still possible to have afternoon tea at many cafes and restaurants around the island.

Totally Barbados also mentions the different types of accommodations available. Sure, as with every travel site, the top-of-the-line options are heavily promoted, but locally-owned guesthouses and home-stay programs are also mentioned. This gives budget travelers and culturally-conscious visitors a different set of options.

There are other insider tips on offer as well, such as the expected amount to tip a bag handler at your hotel or at the airport ( per bag) and how to use local transport options to save money.

All Caribbean islands have their own set of unusual features. But no other nation has a site like Totally Barbados where some of those features are presented in a user-friendly way. TotallyBarbados.com shows the diverse experiences that are available on the island and makes it easy for visitors to go beyond their resorts or to skip the resort experience all together.
